The Proper Golf Swing Requires The Correct Sequencing
One of the biggest problems for amateur golfers is trying to achieve the proper golf swing is the transition and downswing sequencing. When I have taken lessons from a PGA golf pro, this initial move from backswing into impact always gave me the most trouble. My video lessons would always show me either rotating too fast, too far, or too slow. It was very confusing and frustrating.
Many golfers, including very experienced ones, will rotate the hips way to fast and therefore too far before impact. This results in too much lag and the shoulders and arms cannot catch up. They remain too far behind and all power is lost. This does not produce a proper golf swing. You end up sweeping or scooping the golf ball instead of striking it.
A large number of beginning golfers have the extreme opposite problem. They do not rotate the hips at all. Instead, there is a lot of side to side movement. They tend to slide the lower body when they should be turning it. This results in a swing that consists almost entirely on the swinging of the arms. This is not a proper golf swing either. It produces very inconsistent results.
Here is a video of a proper golf swing drill I found that will help you get that proper golf swing by implementing the correct sequencing of the hips. It uses a soccer ball or volleyball and throwing it against the wall and having the hip turn create the momentum and power.
I think this is a pretty cool golf swing drill. I love the imagery of using a golf ball to emulate an eyeball on the front of the hip. I need to find a good place around the house to try it out. I dont think my wife would appreciate me banging a ball against the office or bedroom wall even if it helped me produce the proper golf swing.
