So You Want A Better Golf Swing?

Don’t we all! But there are so many pieces and aspects to the golf swing, which part should you focus on? I think one of the best things to concentrate your efforts on when striving for a better golf swing is tension. Actually, you should work on eliminating the tension in your swing.

The video at the end of this message does an excellent job of identifying several different places during the golf swing where tension can creep in. Being unable to relax in any one of these portions of the swing will produce less than desirable results.

The takeaway is the first area where tension can prevent you from developing a better golf swing. If you roll your hands and take the club too far to the inside, it is very difficult to keep your wrists and forearms relaxed. In the same way, if you try to hinge your wrists early, tension will show up. So you need to take a smooth and natural takeaway keeping your chest, shoulders, arms and hands moving back together.

From the takeaway to the top of the swing can produce tightness too. If you try to forcibly lift the club into position instead of letting the momentum of the club head get your there, your upper arms and shoulders will tense up.

Probably the most difficult part of the golf swing to keep everything relaxed in, is the transition. It is the point where you are changing the direction. Up until this point everything tends to move nice and slow. Now you want to get the club head down to the back of the ball and generate as much speed as possible. Usually what happens it your grip immediately strengthens causing enormous tension throughout your upper body.

This video is a little longer than most, but I think he does a good job of both identifying where and when you may feel tension. He also has some tips at the end to help you subconsciously work on relaxing and creating a better golf swing.
